After ACL surgery: what to expect from rehab

The surgery is behind you. Your knee is wrapped, you’re nervous about putting weight on it, and one question keeps circling: when do I get my life back? Almost every ACL patient feels exactly this in the first days after the operation. The good news is that with the right rehabilitation, recovery follows a predictable path — your knee gets stronger stage by stage. It helps a lot to know what each stage looks like.
The three phases of rehab
Weeks 0–2: protection and swelling control. The job here is simple: bring the pain and swelling down, move the knee gently, and wake up the thigh muscles that switch off after surgery. The exercises are careful and safe. Nobody will push your knee into anything it isn’t ready for.
Weeks 2–12: strength and range of motion. You gradually work back to fully straightening and bending the knee, add balance work, and rebuild the strength in your leg. This is where most people feel the first big win — walking starts to feel normal again.
Months 3–9: return to sport. Running, jumping and quick changes of direction come back into the plan step by step. You return to full training when testing shows your knee is genuinely ready, not when the calendar says so.
Why supervised exercise beats resting
Instinct tells you to move less so the knee can heal. In reality the opposite is true: long periods of rest weaken the muscles and stiffen the joint, which slows everything down. Controlled, well-executed exercise is the most reliable way back to your old form. The key word is “controlled” — your therapist checks your technique at every session and adjusts the load to your actual progress, so you are always working hard enough to improve but never so hard that you set yourself back.
Our patient Giorgi is a real example. He came to PhysioHub with an ACL and meniscus injury, limping and struggling to walk. After one month of supervised rehab he wrote in his Google review that the results were incredible.
What your first PhysioHub session looks like
The first visit starts with an assessment. Your therapist talks through your history in detail, checks the knee’s movement, strength and swelling, and then builds an individual plan with you — concrete goals and realistic timeframes. Where it helps, modern BTL equipment supports the process. Every following session builds on your progress: what you can already do gets done, and what’s too early can wait.
The sooner proper rehab starts, the calmer and more predictable the road back to sport becomes. Book your first visit with the button below, or call us on 599 43 83 33 — we’ll plan the rest together.
